Charo appears as herself in the Jane the Virgin episode “Chapter Forty‑Four.” In this storyline, she is a longtime friend of Rogelio de la Vega (Jaime Camil). Rogelio, to test the loyalty or trust of his intern, lies about having dated Charo, and that embellishment ends up leaking to the tabloids. When the rumor circulates publicly, Charo shows up to confront Rogelio and make it clear she will not "let him get away with his lie."
Charo was enthusiastic about appearing on the show, calling it “one of the most original shows that’s been presented in the United States,” and praised the cast, saying “Gina Rodriguez, Jaime, the other actors – is so talented, so extraordinary.” She also described being made to feel welcome on set: “They treated me special, it was like being at home.” Her musical skill, specifically her guitar playing, is also part of her role in the episode.
Of working with Charo, Camil told Variety, “I want Charo to live with me in my house. I want to have her in my pocket whenever I need cheering up. I’d never met her — my character has been talking about her since the first episode. When she arrives she is so full of life, I wish I had 10% of her energy in my life. She’s a tour de force and so disciplined when it comes to being on set. It was a joy. She kept telling me to take Vitamin C. It was like, ‘Yes, Charo, the medic will bring me some, I promise.’”
Describing them as "hot tamales," Spanish-American star Charo discusses the barriers to success Latinos face in Hollywood and how 'Jane the Virgin' combats them.
