Charo joined Chico and the Man during its fourth season (1977‑1978) in a recurring capacity, playing Aunt Charo, the aunt of a young boy named Raul (played by Gabriel Melgar). Raul is adopted by Ed Brown (Jack Albertson) after being found in the trunk of Ed’s car (following a fishing trip to Tijuana). Aunt Charo comes from Spain and attempts to become part of the household “family” with Raul and Ed, sometimes causing friction in the dynamics due to her strong personality and different expectations

One episode in which she figures prominently is titled “Charo Takes Over” (Season 4, Episode 9), which aired December 2, 1977. In that episode, Aunt Charo puts her concert tour on hold to spend time with Raul. She also tries to help with Ed’s garage business, leading Ed to protest, “I am going to build your business up from the ground down!” Another exchange from the same episode: when Ed makes a remark about “opportunity knocking,” Charo replies, “the problem with you is that you didn’t listen to opportunity’s knockers!” These scenes illustrate her attempts to insert herself into the family and into Ed’s life in practical ways, not just as a visitor.

Charo remembers guest starring on Chico and the Man with Jack Albertson. From Pop Goes The Culture.
